Assuming Disk Utility doesn't work, try formatting the card using the SD Association's official formatting utility. It may seem a bit silly to download a program just for formatting SD cards, but I've had it fix all sorts of strange errors when nothing else worked, including disk utility / diskutil.

Conclusion As I said before, Microsoft Windows comes with a reformatting option, which lives in the Explorer right-click menu. But I really like MacOS Disk Utility, for the fact that everything is concentrated in the one interface. For me, it’s user-friendly, and hard to mess up. Just my kind of program!

Since this card contains three partitions with one being a blessed bootable partition, I would like to see if there are any ways to get my Mac to generate these for me. Since disk-utility archived the full SD card with partitions, I would assume is has a way to recover it going the other way. Repair issues with file systems First Aid feature in Disk Utility is a great tool to check and repair file system errors. You can use this feature when the external device doesn’t work properly or if a file is corrupt and you want to debug the drive. Of course, First Aid can also repair issues with your internal hard drive, for which you will have to access Disk Utility through recovery mode. • Once you open Disk Utility, drives will be listed. But if you don’t see the drive, click on View > Show all devices • Select the drive you wish to repair • Click First Aid and then click Run. If the repair is complete, you will receive a success message. If it reports an error, you will have to further examine.

4) Change the size of the partition if necessary. To do this, you can either grab the “dot” located between the partitions in the “pie chart” and move it left or right, or you can type a size into the size field. 5) Click “Apply”. This will create the new partition in seconds.

In new DU this means creating one partition, formatting it, resizing that for the second, formatting the second, resizing the second for the third, formatting the third, resizing the third for the fourth, then finally formatting the fourth. In old DU it creates all four partitions the sizes you specify and formats them in sequential order. The latter is blindingly fast compared to all those resizing steps which take forever. I also have yet to use step-by-step directions, specifying exact partition sizes on two disks and have them create partitions the same size on both disks. Every time DU resizes a partition it ends up at “about” the right size, rarely exactly the size you specify.
